FAQs

I’m not flexible! Can I really do yoga?

We’ve got pose variations for bodies of all flexibilities, and blocks, straps, and bolsters to make poses more accessible no matter how stiff and inflexible you are. You might see someone in class next to you doing something that looks like science fiction...but chances are, you’re not the only one in class who can’t do that, and your teacher will offer challenging but doable alternatives. If you practice regularly, you WILL get more flexible over time.

I’ve got an injury. How can I ensure I won’t get hurt in a class?

All of our teachers are trained to work with folks with injuries - in fact, most of us have injuries ourselves, which is why we ended up here. Get to class early so that you’ll have time to check in with your teacher & let them know about your injury and anything that aggravates it. Go slow, easing into the poses & exercises. As you learn to discern what kinds of movements help you heal and what can exacerbate your pain, it helps to work at 70-80% of what you’re capable of, not 100%. If you find you need a modification or a different pose, wave your teacher over and they’ll be happy to help - seriously, it’s what we live for.

What is Forrest Yoga?

Created by American yogi Ana Forrest, Forrest Yoga is a strength-building practice for the strains and stresses of modern-day lifestyles. It offers relief for the wrists, neck, and shoulders, and ease for the knees & low back. It strengthens your legs, your butt, and your abs, which will help you support your body in daily life. Longer holds in strength-building poses release tension and give you time to breathe and feel.

I’ve heard Forrest Yoga is really intense. How do I know if it’s right for me?

We do a lot of strength-work in Forrest Yoga, and yes, doing abs can feel pretty intense! It’s also one of the ways Forrest Yoga helps relieve chronic pain. Weak and tight muscles are pretty much a given if you spend most of your day sitting in a chair, and strengthening and opening them will work wonders for your back, your neck, and your breathing muscles. If there is any move that doesn’t work for you, we’ve got all kinds of variations for back, neck and hamstring injuries and for pregnant & postnatal students. Just ask your teacher.

How hot are the yoga classes at InnerStellar? Why are they heated?

Forrest & Stellarflow Yoga classes are heated to 80-85 degrees. It’s warm in there, but not Bikram-hot. Practicing in a heated room helps to keep you safer and avoid overdoing it in a deeper yoga class. Stay hydrated & take breaks when you need to - and if the heat is new for you, stick with it - most of our students find that their bodies adapt to the temperature in about 3-4 weeks.

If you’d like to start in a cooler room or need cooler temps for medical reasons, we recommend trying any of our Pilates classes or Forrest Yoga Basics, which are taught at ambient temperature.

What is the difference between Pilates mat and machine classes?

Pilates mat classes are practiced on a mat rather than on the equipment, in a group environment with 20-30 other students. They’ll help you release tension, breathe easier & strengthen your core.

Pilates machine classes are limited to 5 students, so you’ll benefit from more attention from your teacher. They are taught on the Reformer, Springboard, and the Wunda Chair, spring-based equipment designed to help you get your arms, legs, and core stronger while supporting your joints.

How often do I need to practice yoga or Pilates to get results?

To experience the optimal benefits of Forrest & Stellarflow Yoga and Pilates, it’s important to practice regularly. We recommend a minimum of 1 time per week but you'll have EPIC BREAKTHROUGHS in your body, nervous system, and even in your relationship with your Spirit when you start practicing 3 or more times per week. Whether it's in class or at home, for 20 minutes or an hour and a half, practicing Forrest & Stellarflow Yoga and/or Pilates on a consistent basis will accelerate your learning and greatly enhance your overall health and wellbeing.
